Historical Background
The original fort was constructed in 1820 by Asantehene Osei Tutu Kwamina, aiming to replicate the coastal forts built by European merchants. This initial structure was destroyed during the Third Anglo-Ashanti War. In 1897, the British rebuilt the fort, which has since withstood significant historical events, including the 1900 siege led by Yaa Asantewaa, where 29 Britons were held captive within its walls. In the early 1950s, the fort was repurposed into the Armed Forces Museum, preserving its rich history.
Exhibits and Collections
The museum’s diverse collection encompasses military artifacts from various periods, notably the Anglo-Ashanti Wars and World War II. Visitors can explore displays of weapons, medals, photographs, and other military equipment. Highlights include anti-aircraft guns, armored vehicles, and personal items belonging to soldiers, providing a tangible connection to Ghana’s military heritage.
