USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum

The USS Hornet Museum, officially known as the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum, is a historic aircraft carrier museum located in Alameda, California. The museum is housed aboard the USS Hornet (CV-12), a World War II-era aircraft carrier that also played a significant role in the Apollo space missions.

The USS Hornet recovered the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 space capsules. The Hangar Deck, where you first enter the USS Hornet, has a beautiful display of fighter planes, and an extensive exhibit of the Apollo-related activities of the aircraft carrier.

    • TBM-3E Avenger: A torpedo bomber from World War II.
    • F-14A Tomcat: A veteran of the Gulf War.
    • SH-3H Sea King: An all-weather helicopter designed for anti-submarine warfare.

Apollo Splashdown Display: The USS Hornet was the recovery ship for the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 missions. Exhibits include:

  • Apollo Command Module CSM-011: Used for the AS-202 uncrewed suborbital flight test.
  • Mobile Quarantine Facility: Used by the Apollo 14 astronauts following their return to Earth.
  • SH-3H Sea King Helicopter: Used in the 1995 movie “Apollo 13.”
