This is a flying
prototype for the PBM (Patrol Bomber, Martin) series of flying boat
bombers. It was built in 1937 at 3/8 scale to test performance before a
full-size aircraft was built. In its final configuration the plane carried one
pilot. A major goal of tests with the Tadpole Clipper was evaluating the
aircraft's sea handling qualities. Also, a limited number of test flights were
conducted. The tests resulted in multiple changes for the full-scale design,
including changes to the hull design. When the plane was restored, the aluminum
skin was left off this section to show how the hull was modified to improve
handling while on the water.
