The historic US observation post commemorates the time when here, in the so-called “Fulda Gap”, the onset of World War III was anticipated at any time and Point Alpha was one of the most important outposts of NATO. Only a stone’s throw from the camp, the GDR watchtower and the reconstructed separation barriers mark the inhumanity of the border that divided Germany, Europe and the world for over 40 long years.
The border museum displays the mechanisms of repression, while a multimedia exhibition preserves the memories of the peaceful revolution that ended the Communist dictatorship. A few steps away, on the former death strip, the stations on the “Path of Hope” project heavenwards. Based on the biblical Stations of the Cross, the sculpture series that represents the long and sorrowful history preceding the non-violent upheaval of 1989 was completed on the 20th anniversary of Germany reunification.
