The Avrocar was intended to exploit lift and thrust from a single rotor venting the exhaust out the rim of the disk to provide anticipated VTOL-like performance. During flight testing, the Avrocar proved to have unresolved thrust and stability problems that became dangerous above 3 ft off the ground. The project was cancelled in September 1961.
