Fundació Parc Aeronàutic de Catalunya – Sabadell has an ambitious goal for the next few years. It is the establishment of the ‘MUSEU AERONÀTIC DE CATALUNYA’. It is amazing that Catalonia has not such public equipment yet, considering the breakthrough that aviation has meant in the fields of technology, communications, culture, etc. Our trust keeps trying to raise the necessary funds from the government and private corporations alike. It encourages us to see that some of them have already shown interest in our project.

We would like to thank AENA (The government’s organization that manages all Spanish airports) for helping us to obtain the necessary land. In their project of the renovated Sabadell Airport, an area of 10000m2 has been reserved for the Museum. This area is located in the northern edge of the airfield, very close to the future entrance by the railway station. If anyone wishes to see a model of it, there is a scale model at the ground floor of the AENA’s building at the airport. Moreover AENA has initiated a process to transfer the land to FPAC.

The collaboration of the ‘Departament de Politica Territorial’ of the ‘Generalitat de Catalunya’ (the Government of Catalonia) and the ‘Museu de Ciència i de la Tècnica de Terrassa’ (Technology and Science Museum) has made possible the design of an initial project of our Museum which defines the essentials of the building and the economic feasibility of the project.

The project and scale model were displayed in Barcelona in July 2003 during the ‘Jornades d’Aviació General’.

According to this project, the museum will initially occupy 5000m2, an area that will be tripled in later stages. It will enclose workshops, didactic rooms, registry room, cafeteria, shop, etc.

It is worth saying that the Museum is located by the runway of Sabadell Airport, so that visitors will have the chance to see some of the exhibited airplanes actually fly. The Museum should be an active place by hosting cultural and formative activities, delivering multimedia explanations, etc. It shouldn’t be understood in any case as a rest place for vintage aircrafts.
