The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum is housed in a former aircraft hangar at Doncaster Sheffield Airport (formerly RAF Finningley). The museum focuses on showcasing the evolution of aircraft, from the early days of flight to modern aviation. It is especially significant for its collection of military and civil aviation aircraft that were part of the region’s history.

Key Features of the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum at Aeroventure:
- Extensive Aircraft Collection:
- The museum boasts an impressive collection of military and civilian aircraft, including aircraft from both World War II and the post-war period. Some of the most notable aircraft on display include a BAe Harrier, a Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer, English Electric Lightning and a Vulcan B2 bomber cockpit.
- The museum also has several aircraft on static display, offering a rare opportunity for visitors to get up close to iconic planes that have played crucial roles in both civilian and military aviation history.
- Military Aircraft:
- One of the museum’s highlights is its collection of military aircraft, with a particular focus on aircraft used by the British Armed Forces. These include aircraft such as the SEPECAT Jaguar, the HS Buccaneer, and various Royal Air Force aircraft. The museum gives a detailed account of the role of these planes in various conflicts and operations.
- A particularly notable aircraft is the Vulcan B2 bomber, one of the three main British V-bombers used in the Falkland War, which played an important role in the United Kingdom’s nuclear deterrence strategy.
- Civilian Aircraft:
- The museum also features several civilian aircraft, reflecting the development of commercial aviation in the 20th century. The de Havilland DH.104 Dove, a airliner used by both the Royal Air Force and commercial airlines, is one of the major exhibits.
- Visitors can explore how aircraft design evolved to meet the demands of passenger transport, from the early propeller-driven planes to the more modern jet aircraft that revolutionized air travel.
- Exhibits and Displays:
- There are also detailed exhibits on the RAF Finningley airbase, which was home to a variety of military aircraft during its operational life, including several that were stationed there during the Cold War.
- Restoration Projects:
- The South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum at Aeroventure is also known for its restoration workshops, where volunteers and staff work to restore and maintain the museum’s aircraft. Visitors often have the opportunity to watch the restoration process in action, which adds an educational and hands-on element to the museum experience.
- The museum has several ongoing restoration projects, and it is committed to preserving historic aircraft for future generations.
- Aviation Memorabilia:
- In addition to aircraft, the museum has an extensive collection of aviation memorabilia, including uniforms, photos, documents, and other artifacts that tell the story of aviation through the decades. These items provide historical context and a more personal view of the individuals who worked with these aircraft.
