History:
Established in 1928, the Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot was created following a catastrophic explosion at a New Jersey depot, which highlighted the need for a more remote location. Hawthorne was selected due to its isolation, reducing the risk to populated areas. During World War II, the depot was instrumental in supplying ammunition for the Pacific theater. In 1977, control of the depot transitioned from the U.S. Navy to the U.S. Army.
Exhibits:
The Hawthorne Ordnance Museum‘s collection features a diverse array of demilitarized ordnance, including bombs, missiles, and artillery shells, as well as military uniforms, photographs, and historical documents. Visitors can also explore hands-on displays, such as a tank and a jeep, offering an interactive experience.
