The Musée aéronautique de Bretagne displays its aircraft in the former hangars of the Aviation légère de l’armée ((Alat) Army Aviation) to the south of the airport. Built in 1936, they were then used as an air base by the Germans, then the Americans during the Second World War. This historic site will nevertheless require some work in order to meet the standards of establishments receiving the public.
Among the thirty or so items preserved on the former Army Light Aviation (Alat) base, south of Rennes airport, are a Boeing Stearman, a mythical 1940 biplane, the 1960s twin-engine Caravelle, and the “CriCri”, one of the fastest electric aircraft in the world. A DC3, a World War II transport plane, is also in the final stages of restoration and should be back in the air soon.
An exceptional fleet, which should, in the future, be exhibited to the general public, if the project of a true aeronautical museum of Brittany succeeds. Until then, Hugues Duval, the president, plans “to organise an open day, as soon as the health conditions allow it, for “all aviation enthusiasts”.
