History and Mission Museo Nacional de Aeronáutica
Initially situated near the Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, the museum faced challenges due to exposure to the elements and space constraints. In 2001, it relocated to the historic Morón Airport and Air Base, Argentina’s first international airport, providing expansive hangars to better protect and display its extensive collection. The museum’s mission is to conserve and exhibit aircraft and artifacts that highlight the evolution and achievements of Argentine aviation.
Exhibits and Collections
Spanning approximately 14 hectares, the Museo Nacional de Aeronáutica features over 50 aircraft from various eras of aviation history. Notable exhibits include:
- FMA I.Ae. 27 Pulqui I: The first jet aircraft designed and built in Latin America.
- FMA I.Ae. 33 Pulqui II: A pioneering swept-wing jet fighter prototype.
- Latécoère XXV: An aircraft famously flown by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry for Aeroposta Argentina.
- Douglas A-4 Skyhawk: Used by the Argentine Air Force, with models like the A-4P and A-4C on display.
- Gloster Meteor F.4: One of the earliest jet fighters, showcasing mid-20th-century aviation advancements.
In addition to aircraft, the Museo Nacional de Aeronáutica houses thematic halls dedicated to aviation engines, Antarctic missions, pioneers of Argentine aviation, and more. Visitors can also explore a replica control tower and enjoy amenities like the “Icaro” coffee shop and a gift boutique.
The museum is divided in different halls, dedicated to specific themes:
- Motores: displaying aviation engines.
- Malvinas: which includes a Grumman HU-16 Albatross amphibian used in the 1970s to establish a route line between Comodoro Rivadavia and Malvinas (Falkland Islands).
- Antartida: for material used in Antarctica.
- Pioneros: dedicated to Aviation pioneers.
- Torre de control: details the interior of a control tower.
