The Narsarsuaq Museum, also known as “Bluie West One,” is a historical museum located in Narsarsuaq, South Greenland. It focuses on two primary themes: the American military presence during World War II and the region’s Viking history. The museum highlights the role of the Bluie West One airbase, which operated from 1941 to 1958 as a critical link in the Allied supply chain. It houses an extensive collection of photographs, artifacts, and displays that document the construction and daily life of the base during the war.

More of a repository of ancient memorabilia and a history lesson than a museum, the Narsarsuaq Museum is definitely worth a visit when you’re in town. There are two parts. One concerns the Vikings. It makes a good introduction to the history of the area so try to see that at the beginning of your journey.
The second part concerns the “Bluie West One” base itself. The panels give a great history of the place. The pictures are a fascinating time capsule of a place and era. Nurses, men, officers, construction of a base of nothing… All the photos are enlightening and some are downright nice (look for the image of recruits in tow).
