The Douglas C-117D 17171 is a local tourist attraction, located on Iceland’s southern coast, the abandoned US Navy DC-3 aircraft crash-landed on the black sand beach in 1973. Fortunately, all crew members survived the emergency landing. Over time, the fuselage has become an iconic photo spot, contrasting starkly against the vast volcanic landscape.

Reaching the Solheimasandur Plane Wreck requires a 45-minute walk from the designated parking area, as driving directly to the wreck is prohibited to protect the fragile environment. Tourists are advised to dress appropriately for changing weather and to respect the site by avoiding climbing on the aircraft.
With its dramatic setting and historical significance, the Solheimasandur Plane Wreck remains a powerful symbol of resilience and a must-see stop for those exploring Iceland’s unique natural wonders. Its state is becoming very bad. A replacement aircraft has been found in an ex RAF Dakota which was stored at Keflavík airport.
