Founded by aviation enthusiast Tony Caldwell, the museum is housed in a restored World War II–era hangar. The building dates back to the time when Mustang Field served as a U.S. Army Air Corps training base, giving the collection both historic aircraft and an authentic historic setting.

What you’ll see

Visitors typically find at The Caldwell Collection at Mustang Field:

  • Classic biplanes and taildraggers from the 1920s and 1930s
  • Types such as Waco, Stearman, and other pre-war trainers and sport aircraft
  • Ongoing restoration projects inside the hangar workshop
  • Period memorabilia, engines, tools, and aviation artifacts

A key difference from many museums: several aircraft are regularly flown, so you may see taxi runs or departures during events or good weather.

Experience

The atmosphere is closer to a working hangar than a formal museum. Expect:

  • Guided tours by volunteers or staff
  • Up-close access to aircraft
  • Stories about restoration and local WWII training history
  • Occasional fly-ins or special aviation gatherings

Visiting tips

  • Typically open limited days (often Saturdays) or by appointment
  • Located about 20 miles (30 km) west of Oklahoma City along Interstate 40
  • Best for aviation enthusiasts who enjoy hands-on, authentic historic aviation
